BATC Mission

The Baltimore Area Triathlon Club is a multi-sport athletic club based in Baltimore, Maryland. Our club offers guidance and support to people of all ages and abilities who participate in one or more endurance sports.

Our focus is on running, cycling, and swimming, but we participate in many other activities as well. The Club believes that a healthy participation in athletics allows a person to achieve their potential, both physically and emotionally. And as a club, we provide information, support, coaching, and friendship to all who come our way.

March 8th - New Triathlete Program

Your first “Try to Tri!”- BATC New Triathletes Program 2010

Winter is making a welcomed exit and with the arrival of warmer weather it is time to kickoff our BATC New Triathlete Program. If you’ve ever thought of running a triathlon but don’t know how to get started, this program is for you.

At BATC we want you to succeed and as the saying goes, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” The New Triathele Progam will help you reach that goal and realize, you can do it!

Here's what it consists of:

  • THE PLAN
    • Training plan for a race – The training starts on March 23rd and ends 12 weeks later on June 12th.
  • THE MENTOR
    • You will be matched up with a mentor from the club. This is someone with more triathlon experience who you can email and talk to when you have questions, and you WILL have questions.
  • THE RACES
    • That end date of the program will set you up nicely for one of four local sprint tris or any other one you choose.
      • June 12th is the date of the Tri it Triathlon in Delaware, a sprint race setup for new triathletes.
      • June 20th is the St. Andrews sprint triathlon in Delaware
      • June 20th is also the South Carroll Sprint Tri on the 20th. The South Caroll swim club tri is a pool swim for those folks still a little unsure of their open water skills.
      • June 27th is the celebration sprint in Columbia.
  • THE STRATEGY
    • Your training plan will be a complete plan covering swim / bike / and run training with detailed instructions.
      • You'll get a race execution guide that will leave no stone unturned and let you know what to expect and how to conduct yourself on race day.
      • Two controlled course bike rides in case you are getting back into the swing of biking. Controlled course means either on closed roads or in a state park.
      • The first target race will be the Cascade Lake Duathlon in May. Duathlons are run / bike / run events that are excellent stepping stones into the sport before you get involved in any open water swims.
      • Course preview rides of the South Carroll and Celebration Sprint Courses
      • Open Water and Transitions Clinic with the rest of the club.
      • Volunteering at a local race before your goal race to see what it is like from the inside out.
      • One of the weekend workouts on the training plan will be a hosted workout, at least two mentors or other volunteers will be there to help guide you along and offer whatever help they can.
  • THE REWARDS!
    • New Friends! Great Fun! Good Health!

Who is it for?

Anyone who thinks they may benefit is welcome to join, experienced triathlete or not. If you’ve never had a training program you might find this a good way of getting into that sort of training mode.

With the help of your mentor you will easily be able to modify the plan to get ready for an Olympic distance race.

Previous graduates of the program have gone on to longer distance races later that same year. For example if you are thinking of doing the Diamond in the Rough Tri in July or perhaps the Diamondman or Bethany Beach Tris in September, this can be a good stepping stone. If your sights are set a bit higher than a sprint tri we will do our best to match you with a mentor who has experience at the longer distances.

Program Requirements – Read this PART!

The New Triathlete Program is open to BATC members. BATC membership costs $30 and can be done online.

The New Triathlete Program costs $25, to register please email and you’ll get instructions.

All members of the New Triathlete Program are REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER AT THE COLUMBIA TRIATHLON ON MAY 23RD

This is not flexible, if you can’t volunteer that day for whatever reason, please don’t sign up for the program.

All races depend on volunteers, we volunteer at races so that others can have the fun. By the same token some days when we race others are volunteering for us. We all do our part to keep the sport healthy and thriving.

When does it Start?

There will be a get acquainted meeting on Sunday March 14th at 10:00 AM at Einstein Brothers Bagels in Towson. We will have some mentors come down, talk over a cup of coffee etc. Afterward you are invited to come down the road to the Merritt Athletic Club for a free swim with USA Triathlon Certified Coach Kevin Joubert. It will be informal but if you need swim help it might be a good idea to come down.

Even if you don’t come to the get acquainted meeting, you will be able to start any time in the first three weeks or so of the program.

Please tell your friends who may be interested and email with any questions you might have.

Thank You

May 3rd 2009 - Nanticoke River Swim and Triathlon

Sunday May 3rd was one of the first races of the season for the Baltimore Area people, there were a good number of BATC members racing at the Nanticoke River Swim and Tri. The race is on eastern shore and you can assume it ai flat bike and run. Along with the race is a 1 mile or 3 mile open water swim held, a good option for people gearing up for the Chesapeake Bay Swim.

And how did they do? Pretty well, Stacy Karwacki was the 1st woman and 6th overall, using the 4th fastest female swim and 3rd fastest bike to hold off the field.

Dejan, no aerobars Dejan Ernestl was 4th overall, missing the podium by a minute or so. Being European, Dejan refuses to use aero bars claiming they are declasse' and he would rather look cool than get on the podium.

Well, that's an exaggeration on my part, but how fast would he be with aerobars? Dejan ended up 1st in his age group, edging it out by only five seconds.

Andrea Mathias was 2nd in her age group, she was more than 9 minutes faster than last year but held the same spot in her age group from 2008.

And the Sarubins, Murray and Susan each took 2nd in their age groups. Susan in the women 50 - 54 and Murray in the 65 - 69 age group.

March 28th - New Triathlete Program Launch Meeting

The next event and official launch for the new triathletes program is set for Saturday March 28th 10:30 AM at Conte Bikes in Bel Air. The new triathletes program is for people new to the sport, or perhaps not so new, and includes a weekly group workout, you are matched up with a mentor and given a training plan to get you ready for a triathlon or duathlon in late May or Early June, all this for an extra $25 after you become a BATC member.

We will be using the Conte's conference room for a little practice and presentation.

The practice will be changing a bike tube. This is what is most commonly done when we have a flat. You'll take the wheel off of your bike, deflate and remove the tube, replace the tube, reseat the tire and put it back on your bike. Flats happen and this is an important skill for you to have for goup rides but also for any ride you go on.. There will be at least two experienced tire tube changers there to guide you along. A lot of people have seen it done or know in theory how to change a tube, but there is nothing like actual practice to give you confidence in doing it.

We'll also go through road riding safety and group riding etiquette.

After all that, around 12:30 PM, you can grab a quick bite at any number of places to eat in the shopping center and we will for a for a ride of about and hour and 15 minutes give or take. As a new triathlete ride, you won't be left alone at the back of the pack.

Please let me know if you plan on coming. All club members are welcome but please remember that paid members of the new triathletes program will be the focus.

If you want more information on this workout or the new triathletes program please let me know by email
